‘Richard III’ at launch of Buckingham’s Half-Angel exhibition Posted On 08 October 2021

Rare coin on display at Buckingham Old Gaol

A rare gold coin, discovered in the Buckingham area and dating back to the reign of Richard III, is the centrepiece of one of Buckingham Old Gaol’s most ambitious exhibitions.

The coin – a Half-Angel – was found by local metal detectorist Dave Bethell, who is a trustee of the Old Gaol Museum, and was bought for the museum with donations from supporters and grants from the Art Fund, the V&A and the Richard III Society.

So it was that re-enactors from The Retynue of Syr John Myddelton living history group, dressed as the monarch and his immediate followers, and mingled with guests such as Carolyn Cumming (the Deputy Lieutenant of Bucks), Margaret Gateley (the Mayor of Buckingham), and Hélène Hill (the chair of the Old Gaol Trust), and Mr Bethell at the launch event for the ‘Richard III and Buckingham’s Half-Angel’ exhibition earlier this month.

The angel was an iconic English gold coin introduced by Edward IV in 1465 and its name originated from its representation of the archangel Michael slaying a dragon. Although its value fluctuated, the coin had such affection with the public that many pubs were named after it, and it remained in service for almost 200 years.

The half-angel, which carried a similar design and was around 20mm in diameter, was introduced in 1472 – 11 years before Richard III came to the throne.

Such is its value, the coin is housed in a specially-dedicated secure case, a purchase made possible through the support of the Rothschild Foundation Covid Recovery Fund.

The exhibition is now open to the public during normal museum opening hours until February – the usual museum entry charges apply – after which the coin will be on display in the museum’s permanent gallery.
